Hendrik Willem Mesdag was a Dutch marine painter known for his depictions of the North Sea and for advocating for the arts in The Hague. He began his professional life as a banker, leaving finance at age 36 to devote himself fully to painting. He studied in Brussels with Willem Roelofs and, from 1868, settled in The Hague, where he focused his work on maritime landscapes. In 1870 he won the gold medal at the Paris Salon with The Breakers of the North Sea, a work that established his international reputation. His most ambitious project was the Panorama Mesdag (1881), a monumental circular painting roughly 14 m high and 120 m in circumference, portraying Scheveningen and its coastal surroundings. When the company operating the panorama went bankrupt, Mesdag bought it and funded its upkeep, showing a personal commitment to its preservation. He was an influential member of Pulchri Studio and became its president in 1889. In 1903 he donated his house on Laan van Meerdervoort and his collection to the nation, a legacy that led to the current Mesdag Museum.
