Henri‑Pierre Roché was a French writer, art dealer, and collector whose activities crossed the avant‑garde movements of the early 20th century. He also worked as a critic and journalist, moving through bohemian and artistic circles in Paris and maintaining ties with central figures such as Marcel Duchamp, Brancusi, and Francis Picabia. His output combines published texts and numerous unpublished manuscripts, including free‑verse poems and travel accounts.
Roché achieved belated notoriety for his fiction: Jules et Jim (1953) and Les Deux Anglaises et le continent (1956) established his literary reputation and shaped the reception of his generation’s sentimental and artistic experience. In archives and publications he assembled essays, memoirs, and critical profiles of artists and movements that place his practice between cultural reporting and literary production.
As a collector and dealer, he helped circulate works and document the modernist scene; his writings on art and his recollections are historically valuable for the study of Parisian artistic networks. Roché’s legacy lies both in the novels that made him known and in the testimonies and unpublished texts that preserve memories of a cultural milieu undergoing intense renewal.
