Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh journalist, explorer, and politician whose career was defined by exploration of Africa’s interior in the 19th century. He became famous for finding the missionary David Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871, an episode remembered for the greeting attributed to Stanley. As a correspondent for the New York Herald, his later expeditions aimed to map the course of the Congo River, traveling long stretches of the upper Lualaba and opening navigation routes that contributed to European knowledge of the continent. Stanley worked directly with colonial interests, being hired by King Leopold II of Belgium to organize a presence in the Congo, a mission that led to the creation of the so‑called Congo Free State. His public accounts and connections with industrialists and politicians in Europe helped justify commercial and missionary expansion in Africa, placing him as an influential figure in the imperialist context of the time. After years of travel, Stanley also led a relief expedition to Emin Pasha (1886–1890) and, having become a naturalized British subject, served in Parliament from 1895 to 1900, receiving a knighthood in 1899. His actions are also a source of controversy: contemporary and later accounts report episodes of violence and authoritarian practices during his expeditions, which complicate his legacy.
