Hubert Émile Faure was a French military officer and a member of the Kieffer Commandos, noted for his participation in the Normandy landings and subsequent operations of World War II. He joined the armed forces young and, after being taken prisoner in 1940 and escaping, persisted until reaching the Free French Forces: he endured imprisonment in Spain and Portugal before embarking for Britain in 1943. In the United Kingdom, he distinguished himself in the rigorous commando training and joined Captain Philippe Kieffer’s Troop 1. On 6 June 1944, Faure landed on Sword Beach and played a decisive role in actions against German defenses in Colleville and the surrounding area, at times commanding his troop in critical moments. He was seriously wounded in July, returned to the front in August and suffered another injury that ended his military career with the rank of enseigne de vaisseau. Back in civilian life, he resumed his studies and worked as a civil engineer. Recognized as one of the last surviving veterans of the Kieffer Commandos, his military service and personal resilience symbolize the French contribution to the Allied efforts and leave a legacy of courage and duty during one of the central episodes of the conflict.
