Arthur Charles Hubert Latham was one of the pioneers of early 20th‑century French aviation, noted for his technical demonstrations and his association with the Antoinette factory. Born to a British family established in France, Latham became prominent as a pilot and instructor after training with Antoinette, emerging as a central figure in the first aeronautical competitions and exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
His flying skill and the reliability of the Antoinette monoplanes made him famous: in 1909 he set duration records and won prizes, and he served as instructor to several notable pupils of the era. He also conducted what is described as the first airplane flight carrying a passenger when he took René Labouchère on a short trip.
Latham entered history when he attempted to cross the English Channel in 1909 in pursuit of the Daily Mail prize. On his first attempt he suffered an engine failure and made the first airplane landing on water, an episode that attracted wide public attention and illustrated both the risks and the potential of emerging aviation.
His legacy is tied to the early development of European aviation: as a leading Antoinette pilot he helped validate design concepts and popularize flight in competitions, teaching and inspiring his contemporaries at a decisive moment for the consolidation of aeronautics.
