Humberto Gessinger is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, multi‑instrumentalist and author, best known for founding and leading the band Engenheiros do Hawaii, with which he performed from 1985 to 2008. As the group’s frontman he took part in the recording of more than 20 albums — studio, live and compilations — selling over three million copies, and earning multiple gold and platinum records as well as hits that shaped Brazilian rock in the 1980s and 1990s.
His work spans styles such as new wave, Rio Grande do Sul rock and folk rock, with frequent nods to 1970s progressive rock, MPB (notably Clube da Esquina) and the regional traditions of Rio Grande do Sul. Gessinger incorporates traditional instruments — harmonica, viola caipira, mandolin and accordion — into his sound, giving his songs a strong cultural identity.
After Engenheiros’ hiatus he formed the duo Pouca Vogal (2008–2012) and has pursued a solo career since 2013, releasing albums and touring. In addition to his musical work, he is active as a columnist and book author, establishing himself as an influential composer in contemporary Brazilian popular music.
