I. F. Stone (Isidor Feinstein) was an American investigative journalist and author whose career was defined by rigorous searches of public records and criticism of power. Associated with the progressive left, he became known for the newsletter I. F. Stone’s Weekly (1953–1971), an independent publication that compiled factual findings, exposed official contradictions, and documented assaults on civil liberties. His work has been recognized as a landmark in twentieth-century American journalism. Trained in the craft from adolescence, Stone worked for newspapers such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, New York Post, and The Nation, where he built a reputation as an old‑school reporter: methodical, documentary-minded, and skeptical of official narratives. Politically he moved through socialist currents and the Popular Front against Nazism, but he remained willing to criticize the Soviet Union when he deemed it necessary. His legacy lies in defending public verification and independent journalism: by grounding investigations in official records and making them available to readers, Stone influenced later investigative practices and set a professional standard of integrity valued by generations of reporters.
