Infanta María Amalia was a Spanish princess, the fourth daughter of King Charles IV and Queen Maria Luisa of Parma, a member of the Bourbon dynasty. Raised at the Madrid court, she belonged to a generation defined by dynastic alliances aimed at strengthening ties between royal houses in late‑18th‑century Europe.
Her marriage was arranged by the royal family: initially betrothed to the heir to Parma, she lost that fiancé to her younger sister, prompting the court to negotiate an alternative match. On 25 August 1795 she married Infante Antonio Pascual, her paternal uncle, a union conventionally justified by dynastic and protocol interests.
María Amalia’s life was spent largely within the palace sphere; she held the title of Noble Lady of the Order of Queen Maria Luisa and did not distinguish herself through public activity or notable personal achievements beyond the ceremonial duties of royalty. She died young in 1798 from complications in childbirth, an episode that underscores the medical vulnerabilities faced by princesses of the period and prematurely ended her place in the Bourbon genealogy.
