Íngrid Betancourt Pulecio is a Franco-Colombian politician and activist, known both for her parliamentary career and for the long captivity she endured at the hands of the FARC. The daughter of public figures, she studied political science in Paris and grew up in a culturally influential environment, associating with figures such as Gabriel García Márquez and Fernando Botero.

Elected senator with the highest vote count in that election, Betancourt became known for anti-corruption platforms, efforts to combat drug trafficking, and environmental advocacy. Her parliamentary work and outspoken criticism of powerful sectors made her a polarizing figure and the target of threats, affecting her personal and political life.

In 2002, while campaigning for the presidency, she was kidnapped by the FARC and remained in captivity until July 2008, when she was freed in a military operation. The episode marked her career and drew broad international attention to the Colombian conflict and the negotiations over hostages.

After her release she established an international public presence, receiving recognition including inclusion on the BBC’s 100 Women list in 2013, and remained active in debates on human rights and public policy.
