Isabel Burton, born Isabel Arundell, was a writer and the wife of Sir Richard Francis Burton, whose life became closely linked to the career of the famous Victorian explorer. From a prominent Catholic family, she was active in London social work—organizing the Stella Club to assist the women and children of abandoned soldiers—and was intellectually persistent, educated in a convent and skilled in writing and theological study. As Burton’s partner, Isabel took an active role in his work, encouraging him and helping to edit his publications; she also published travel accounts and religious studies on Syria and Palestine, as well as translations and essays. After her husband’s death, she carried out a controversial and decisive act: she burned the majority of Burton’s diaries and manuscripts, including material she deemed improper, a decision that had a lasting impact on the historiography and biography of the explorer. Late in life she compiled and published a two-volume biography of Richard Burton and left autobiographical and travel writings published posthumously. Her legacy is ambiguous: she is seen both as a protector of her husband’s reputation and as responsible for significant documentary losses for scholars of the cultures the couple studied.
