J. D. Salinger was an American writer whose comparatively small body of work exerted considerable influence on post‑World War II literature. He first gained notice with short stories published in The New Yorker, including “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” (1948), and achieved worldwide prominence with the novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951). Centered on Holden Caulfield, that book became a touchstone for readings about adolescent alienation and the loss of innocence, continuing to sell strongly across decades.

After the success of The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger adopted a reclusive stance, sharply reducing his output and public presence. His published work also includes short‑story collections and novellas such as Nine Stories (1953), Franny and Zooey (1961) and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction (1963), in which members of the Glass family—recurring, central figures—stand out.

The last work released during his lifetime was the novella Hapworth 16, 1924, published in 1965. Despite his prolonged silence and controversies surrounding unpublished material, Salinger’s legacy remains tied to the distinctive voices of his characters and his lasting influence on generations of readers.
