John Edgar Hoover was an American law enforcement officer who for 38 years served as the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), considered the largest law enforcement organization in the world and the number one law enforcement authority in the United States.

During his time at the head of the bureau (until his death), he served eight presidents and 18 Attorneys General. He changed the history of the FBI: the formerly inefficient organization of 657 agents (often corrupt) became the largest law enforcement organization on the planet, with more than 16,000 employees, as well as modern methods of criminal investigation. In the year of his death, the FBI files contained more than 200 million fingerprints.

The tragedy of the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby – the son of millionaire aviator Charles Lindberg, in 1932 – would help Hoover obtain from Congress the transformation of the Bureau of Investigation into a truly federal body, with far greater resources, a much broader structure, and powers to investigate crimes in all the states, bypassing state police.

During McCarthyism, he participated in the hunt for spies and communists.
