Jack Lord, born John Joseph Patrick Ryan, was an American actor whose career spanned theater, film, and television. Trained at acting schools and with credits on Broadway, he first drew attention in films such as The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell and in television series roles that established his screen presence. In film, he was the first actor to portray Felix Leiter in the James Bond franchise (Dr. No). He became internationally known for creating the character Steve McGarrett in the series Hawaii Five-O, a role he played from 1968 to 1980 and for which he also took on production responsibilities after the creator Leonard Freeman’s death. Known for his professional rigor, Lord also pursued painting, and his work received institutional recognition — including a piece in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and works held by several museums. In his later decades he gradually withdrew from screen work, devoting himself to art and philanthropic activities in Hawaii.
