Jacob Grimm was a philologist, jurist, and scholar of popular traditions, a central figure of German academic Romanticism. Together with his brother Wilhelm, he became known for collecting and editing folk tales that became cultural touchstones—narratives such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel—and for his systematic investigation of Germanic language and law. Trained in law at Marburg, Grimm deepened his historical and linguistic research under the influence of Friedrich Carl von Savigny, and served as librarian, diplomat, and professor in Göttingen and Berlin. His work encompassed historical grammar, literary history, and the study of medieval source material, in addition to a decisive contribution to German lexicography through the major dictionary project he led with his brother. Politically, he drew attention by signing, with colleagues from Göttingen, a protest against the revocation of the Kingdom of Hanover’s constitution—an act that cost him his position and led to temporary exile; he later returned to academic posts in Berlin. Jacob Grimm’s legacy combines the preservation of oral tradition with the construction of modern philological methods, influencing folklore studies, historical linguistics, and German national culture.
