Jacques Poitrenaud was a French filmmaker whose career ranged from assistant director to director, screenwriter and producer. He began as an assistant to figures such as Roger Vadim, Michel Boisrond and Raoul André, taking part in important French film productions of the 1950s and 1960s before making his directorial debut in 1960. Over the following decades he directed feature and short films and contributed to anthology films, while also working on numerous projects in directing or support roles. In 1973 he created the Perspectives du cinéma français section for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, an initiative aimed at promoting emerging national works. At the institutional level, he ran the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival from 1984 to 1994, dedicated to independent films, and was one of the founders of the Civil Society of Authors, Directors and Producers (ARP) in 1987. He also helped launch the Rencontres cinématographiques de Beaune, whose first meeting took place in 1990. His legacy lies in promoting and supporting auteur and independent cinema in France, and in building collective structures designed to protect and enhance film authors and producers.
