James Kelman is a central figure in contemporary Scottish literature, the author of novels, short stories, plays and essays that gave voice to the working-class experience of Glasgow. His work is characterized by interior monologues, experimentation with stream of consciousness and a linguistic realism that incorporates Glaswegian speech patterns, breaking with standard literary English. An internationally awarded writer, Kelman was a Booker Prize finalist with A Disaffection (1989) and won the prize in 1994 with How Late It Was, How Late; he has also received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Scottish literary awards and, in 2024, the Saltire Society Lifetime Achievement Award. His writing influenced later generations of Scottish novelists, such as Irvine Welsh and Alan Warner. Beyond his fiction, Kelman took part in Glasgow’s literary scene—joining writing groups and collaborating with playwrights—and his work has provoked public debates about language, social representation and cultural elitism. The author’s literary archive is held at the National Library of Scotland, reflecting his importance and legacy for Scottish literature.
