James Rosati was an American abstract sculptor active chiefly from the 1940s onward. He moved to New York in 1944, joining the circle of the New School of abstract expressionists and becoming a founding member of the Eighth Street Club. He took part in important group exhibitions such as the 9th Street Art Exhibition and shows at the Stable Gallery alongside figures like Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. His work drew attention in subsequent decades for its monumentality and for his use of stone and stainless steel: during the 1960s he produced significant stone pieces; in 1972 he created Ideogram, a stainless steel sculpture more than seven meters tall that was installed in the plaza between the World Trade Center towers. He received awards and fellowships that helped establish his career, including the Logan Art Institute prize (1962) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1964). Rosati’s works are held in public collections in the United States and abroad, including museums such as the Whitney, the National Gallery of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art, as well as institutions in Italy and Hawaii. His legacy lies in his contribution to the postwar sculptural dialogue and in the presence of his monumental works across public collections.
