Jean-Pierre Aumont was a French stage, film and television actor whose career was prominent from the 1930s through the 1970s. Discovered on the stage—with a notable role in Jean Cocteau’s play La Machine infernale (1934)—he became a matinée idol and a leading man in romantic roles, working both in France and in Hollywood. His career was interrupted by World War II: of Jewish family background, he fled occupied France, worked in Hollywood and joined the Free French Forces, taking part in the North African campaign and on the Italian and French fronts. He was awarded the Légion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre for his military service. After the war he resumed his film career—with films such as Heartbeat (1946) and Lili (1953)—and expanded his work in television and musical theatre, appearing in productions such as Tovarich, South Pacific and Gigi. Recognized for his contribution to French cinema, he received an honorary César and was made Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1991, cementing a lasting artistic legacy.
