Jean Tinguely was a Swiss sculptor noted for his kinetic machine-sculptures, known as Métamatics, which extended the Dadaist tradition into the postwar period. His work satirized automation and mass technological production, combining humor, social critique and mechanical ingenuity. Part of the Paris avant-garde, he signed the Nouveau réalisme manifesto in 1960 and took part in major exhibitions at the MoMA and other leading European institutions.
Among his best-known achievements are Homage to New York (1960), a sculpture that partially self-destructed at the MoMA, and Study for an End of the World No. 2 (1962), detonated in the desert near Las Vegas. Long-term collaborations with Niki de Saint Phalle produced iconic public works such as the Stravinsky Fountain (in Paris) and Le Cyclop, as well as large installations like Hon — en katedral.
His legacy permeates contemporary mechanical art and influenced generations of kinetic and assemblage artists. Retrospectives at major museums and the presence of his works in public spaces confirm his importance in twentieth-century art, making Tinguely a central figure in the dialogue between machine, performance and cultural critique.
