Jesús Flores Magón was a Mexican journalist, lawyer and political leader, an important figure in the early years of the struggle against Porfirio Díaz. Graduating in law in 1897, he was notable as a cofounder and the first editor of the newspaper Regeneración, a vehicle for criticism of the regime and the dissemination of liberal ideas that took an active part in anti‑Porfirian demonstrations. His journalistic and legal work led to arrests and to exile in the United States, where he politically distanced himself from his more radical brothers Enrique and Ricardo. On his return to Mexico in 1910, he took part in the political reorganization that followed Díaz’s fall and cooperated with moderate sectors of the press and the Mexican Liberal Party. During Francisco I. Madero’s presidency he held positions in the executive branch, serving as Undersecretary of Justice and as Secretary of Government in 1912, later resigning over disagreements about the composition of the cabinet. After Victoriano Huerta’s coup he was again forced into exile; he later returned and devoted himself mainly to practicing law. His career marks the transition between moderate liberalism and the more radical currents of the period, leaving a legacy in journalism and in the political struggle for institutional renewal in Mexico.
