Jim Otto was a professional American football player who served as a center for fifteen seasons with the Oakland Raiders, during the American Football League era and after the merger with the NFL. Known for his durability and consistency, he was named First-Team All-Pro on ten occasions—a record at the time—and was selected to both the AFL All-Time Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, in his first year of eligibility, Otto established a reputation as a key member of dominant offensive lines that frequently led the leagues in offensive production.
Coming from humble origins, he excelled in high school and at the University of Miami, where he played center and linebacker before signing with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 1960. Also known for his iconic number 00, he became an ever-present starter, compiling 210 consecutive games; his career encompassed seasons that reached multiple title contests, including an AFL championship victory.
His legacy is tied to technical excellence, physical toughness, and a central role in the Raiders’ golden era. Teammates with notable players such as Gene Upshaw, Otto left a lasting mark on the sport’s history and is frequently ranked among the best professional centers of his generation.
