Jim Thorpe (James Francis Thorpe) was an American athlete prominent in the first half of the 20th century, celebrated for his remarkable sporting versatility. Born in an Indigenous community in the territory that is now Oklahoma, he took part in and competed across numerous disciplines—from track and field to American football and baseball—and became a symbol of the complete athlete of his time. His international breakthrough came at the 1912 Games, where he won the pentathlon and decathlon, victories that made him a national celebrity. A dispute over his amateur status, prompted by earnings from semiprofessional baseball, resulted in those medals being revoked decades before the International Olympic Committee rehabilitated him and officially restored his titles. In American football he excelled professionally with the Canton Bulldogs and helped establish the league that later evolved into the NFL, serving as the first president of the players’ association in 1920. After retiring from sport he endured personal and financial hardships, but his legacy remains: regarded by many as one of the greatest athletes of the century, he inspired tributes and films and had a Pennsylvania town named after him.
