Joel Agee is an American writer and translator based in New York whose career blends memoir, essays, and translations of classic and contemporary European authors. The son of author James Agee, he spent part of his childhood between Mexico and East Germany, an experience he recounts in Twelve Years – An American Boyhood in East Germany, a book that depicts a distinctive family and political context in the postwar period. Over several decades, Agee has contributed essays and criticism to publications such as The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, and The New York Times Book Review, where he also served as fiction editor. His own work includes intimate memoirs — including In the House of My Fear — and, more recently, a first novel, The Stone World (2022). As a translator, Agee has rendered into English major authors such as Heinrich von Kleist, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Elias Canetti, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Aeschylus, shaping the Anglophone reception of those texts. His body of work combines autobiographical writing and literary advocacy, placing him as a bridge between literatures and cultures.
