John Cornell was an Australian producer, screenwriter, actor and businessman whose career spanned journalism, television, film and the hospitality industry. Initially a journalist and newspaper editor in Perth, he moved into television as a producer, where he discovered and managed Paul Hogan. On screen he became known for the character “Strop” on The Paul Hogan Show, a role that established his public profile. As Hogan’s creative partner, Cornell coproduced and co-wrote Crocodile Dundee (1986), which became the biggest commercial success in Australian cinema at the time, and directed its sequel Crocodile Dundee II (1988). His work helped bring Australian culture and humor to a wide international audience. Beyond entertainment, he played a key role in founding World Series Cricket in 1977, recruiting players and promoting the tournament—an initiative that changed the financial and professional relationship between cricketers, leagues and sponsors. In business, he invested in hospitality, notably building and managing the Byron Beach Hotel, a project that gained strong market recognition. In later years he faced complications from Parkinson’s disease. His legacy combines cultural impact—chiefly through the Crocodile Dundee franchise—and institutional change in Australian professional cricket.
