He soon entered the automotive world, starting at Chrysler and then moving to Packard in 1952. After joining General Motors in 1956, the name DeLorean began to gain prominence. Early in his career he was appointed chief engineer of Pontiac. In 1969 he was promoted to General Manager of Chevrolet. Some people thought DeLorean would be the next president of GM. He left GM in April 1973.
On 24 October 1975 he founded the DeLorean Motor Company to fulfill his dream of making the DMC DeLorean a reality. He began by hiring top engineers and designers and building his factory in Dunmurry, near Belfast, Northern Ireland. He enlisted the help of Colin Chapman (Lotus) in the car's development, and Giorgetto Giugiaro (the same who had created the BMW Nazca, Lotus Esprit, Volkswagen Golf, Fiat Uno and the new Fiat Palio), of Italdesign Giugiaro, for the car's design. DeLorean planned to debut the car in 1979, but it made its debut in 1981.
There are many contradictions regarding the bankruptcy of DeLorean Motor Company Ltd. In a murky frame-up he was accused by FBI informant James Hoffman of associating with a drug dealer in an alleged attempt to save his company. DeLorean was arrested on 20 October 1982 in a Los Angeles hotel and released ten days later for lack of evidence. At his trial he was declared not guilty in August 1984, by which time DMC had already closed and his reputation was ruined.
On Christmas Eve 1982, the DMC DeLorean went out of production and entered automotive history, became a myth, and won fame in Hollywood in the Back to the Future trilogy.
