John Gadbury (1627–1704) was an English astrologer and a prolific author of almanacs and astrological treatises, with some 40 to 50 publications attributed to him. Educated at Oxford at his grandfather’s initiative, he devoted himself to the study and practice of natal and horary astrology, leaving works such as Nauthicum Astrologicum and widely circulated treatises on nativities in the seventeenth century. Initially a supporter and defender of William Lilly in the 1650s, Gadbury later broke with Lilly and even denounced him as fraudulent in 1675. This shift reflects the personal and intellectual disputes that marked the English astrological community of the period. He also maintained rivalries with other contemporaries, such as John Partridge, who was aligned with the Whigs. Politically, Gadbury was identified with High Toryism and converted to Catholicism, positions that brought him into conflict with the authorities. He was wrongfully arrested during the episode known as the Popish Plot and later faced suspicions, including accusations of conspiracy against William III; he also suffered censure for omitting Guy Fawkes Day from his almanacs. His legacy is tied to the popular dissemination of astrology in seventeenth‑century England, both through his extensive printed output and his participation in public debates over authority, faith, and astrological practice.
