John Irving is an American-Canadian novelist known for widely read novels that have been adapted for film. He rose to international prominence with The World According to Garp (1978), which transformed him from a little-known literary author into a prominent figure in popular culture. Several of his books — including The Hotel New Hampshire, The Cider House Rules, and A Prayer for Owen Meany — became bestsellers and form a body of work often characterized by epics set in small New England towns. His work frequently addresses broad family and social themes, including religion, war, and ethics, and incorporates autobiographical elements such as his struggle with dyslexia and his involvement with wrestling. Irving has also worked as a screenwriter: he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules (2000) and wrote screenplays and adaptations of several of his own stories.
