John James Burnet was a Scottish architect prominent in the Edwardian period, whose works shaped the urban landscape of Glasgow and London. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he first established himself with public and commercial projects in Scotland, such as the Fine Art Institute and the Clyde Navigation Trust, before introducing a local version of Neo-Baroque that came to influence Glasgow’s architecture at the end of the 19th century.

Over his career Burnet absorbed French and American influences, adopting modern structural techniques and façades that expressed building technology — a notable example is the McGeoch’s department store and, later in London, the Edward VII Galleries at the British Museum. His practice evolved to include collaborators who would become central figures in British modern architecture, among them Thomas Smith Tait.

Knighted in 1914 and recipient of several international honors, Burnet also contributed to war memorials and institutional buildings in the post–First World War period. His legacy lies in the transition from historicism to modern solutions, in the influence he exerted on subsequent generations, and in the surviving buildings that continue to define civic and cultural centres.
