John Lawrence Russell was an American film and television actor, best remembered for two central roles from television’s golden age: the adventurer Tim Kelly in Soldiers of Fortune (1955–1957) and the taciturn Marshal Dan Troop in Lawman (1958–1962). His career began after World War II with a contract at 20th Century Fox and progressed from supporting parts in studio films to leading roles in Republic Pictures productions and on television. A World War II veteran, Russell used his physical presence and restrained temperament to establish himself in the western genre, appearing in notable titles such as Rio Bravo (1959) and Yellowstone Kelly (1959). Over the following decades he maintained a steady presence in film and TV, adding credits in adventure, western and science fiction productions, including a collaboration with Clint Eastwood, who cast him as an antagonist in Pale Rider (1985). Known for portraying lawmen and hard frontier figures, Russell left a legacy as one of the actors who helped define the archetype of the austere protagonist in American television and film westerns from the 1950s through the 1980s.
