John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate painter, regarded as the leading portraitist of his generation for his evocation of the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian eras. Born in Italy and trained in European artistic centers, Sargent developed a remarkable pictorial technique—especially the ability to “draw with the brush”—which made his official commissions exemplary of grand portraiture, while his landscapes and informal studies approached Impressionism. Over the course of his career he produced some 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as numerous drawings and studies, documenting travels to places as varied as Venice, Capri, the Mediterranean and regions of the United States. His portrait Portrait of Madame X provoked scandal in Paris, a controversy that led him to move the focus of his practice to London, where he enjoyed great success among the elite. In critical reception his work swung between technical admiration and charges of superficiality; in his maturity Sargent turned to murals and painting outdoors, expressing dissatisfaction with the limitations of formal portraiture. Decades after his death, the reassessment of lesser-known works and of complex personal aspects has broadened understanding of his aesthetic and cultural importance.
