Johnnie Ray was an American singer, songwriter and pianist who became a prominent figure in 1950s popular music. Known for the dramatic intensity of his performances and for blending jazz, blues and pop, he reached massive fame with the 1952 double hit “Cry” and “The Little White Cloud That Cried,” which made him a teen idol and sold millions of copies. His vocal style and theatrical stage presence — including cries, collapses and exaggerated gestures — are cited by historians as precursors to rock and roll; artists and critics have described him as influential on later performers in the genre. His work includes a role in the film There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) and numerous television appearances that helped shape his public image. Although he remained highly popular in the United Kingdom and Australia for decades, his commercial career in the United States declined from the late 1950s, culminating in the end of his contract in 1960 and only rare U.S. TV appearances after 1973. Even so, his musical legacy is linked to the transition from traditional pop to the new sounds that gave rise to rock.
