Jon Stevens Corzine is an American financier and politician, known for serving as a United States Senator from New Jersey (2001–2006) and as the state's 54th governor (2006–2010). Before entering public service, he rose to senior leadership at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, where he was a partner, chief financial officer and member of the management committee; he took part in the firm’s international expansion and in changes to its ownership structure during the 1990s. Elected to the Senate after investing substantial personal funds in his campaign, Corzine advocated progressive policies such as universal health care, expanded public education and civil rights. His tenure as governor involved managing a contentious fiscal and political environment, ending with his defeat for reelection in 2009. After leaving politics, he returned to finance as CEO of the brokerage firm MF Global, a position he held until the company’s collapse in 2011. His public record combines influence on financial-sector reform, participation in late-1990s market-rescue efforts and a career defined by movement between high finance and elected office.
