Juan Carlos Ricardo Ferrando Ferrando was a Peruvian LGBT rights activist and a pioneering figure in drag in Peru. The son of the well-known presenter Augusto Ferrando, he trained in film and television production with the BBC and lived in several countries across Europe and the Americas, experiences that shaped his artistic and public work. At 22 he began performing in drag, supported by his father and with appearances on family television programmes. He also worked in theatre under the direction of Diego La Hoz, appearing in productions such as Mal-criadas as well as in other theatrical and film projects listed in his filmography. In 2002 he organized, together with the Movimiento Homosexual de Lima, Peru’s first gay pride march, a significant milestone for LGBT visibility in the country. His coming out, publicized in 2000, and his presence at events and in the media made him a public voice for the community. He spent his final years in the province of Pacasmayo, where he lived with his long-term partner Alfredo Caballero Rayter. He died in 2020 from complications related to diabetes, leaving a legacy as an activist and a reference figure in Peru’s drag movement.
