Judith Krantz was an American novelist and editor whose work defined a popular subgenre of women’s fiction in the last decades of the 20th century. A former fashion editor and magazine journalist, she achieved international fame with the novel Scruples (1978), which became a New York Times bestseller and was translated into dozens of languages, helping crystallize the so-called “sex-and-shopping” or bonkbuster—stories set in the glamorous worlds of fashion and luxury.
Throughout her career she published several commercially successful titles, including Princess Daisy, Mistral’s Daughter and I’ll Take Manhattan, which ranged from family melodrama to multigenerational saga and incorporated references to Jewish identity and the historical context of World War II. Her books sold more than 80 million copies and several were adapted for television.
Krantz also made a name as a public figure through vigorous promotion of her work and by serving on cultural boards and initiatives, among them the Los Angeles Music Center and organizations devoted to end-of-life choices. Her literary output and media presence influenced the market for popular fiction and the portrayal of an aspirational imagination linked to fashion and glamour.
