Julian Bond was a social activist, politician, educator, and commentator, a significant figure in the civil rights movement in the United States. While still young, he helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and served as communications director, taking an active role in voter registration campaigns and the Freedom Summer in Mississippi. His work in civil rights organizations also included cofounding the Southern Poverty Law Center, where he served as president in the organization’s early years. He was elected to the Georgia Legislature in the mid-1960s and, after a dispute that culminated in a Supreme Court decision (Bond v. Floyd), served terms in both the state House and Senate, totaling twenty years in the legislature. He helped organize the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and took part in central debates about the political representation of the Black population in the South. Later, he taught history at the University of Virginia and chaired the NAACP from 1998 to 2010. His legacy combines direct action in the civil rights struggles, institutional intervention through law and politics, and educational work, influencing generations of African American activists and leaders.
