Karl Theodor Jaspers was a German psychiatrist and philosopher whose work deeply influenced modern psychiatry, theology, and philosophy. As a clinician he became known for a biographical approach to patients and for distinguishing the form from the content of mental symptoms—central contributions in General Psychopathology (1913), a work that secured his status as a reference for later diagnostic criteria and psychotherapeutic practice. Jaspers also proposed the classic distinction between “primary” and “secondary” delusions, a position that sparked long‑running debates in the philosophy of mind and clinical practice.
From the 1920s he devoted himself fully to philosophical inquiry, developing a system that engages existentialist currents without accepting that label wholesale. In his Philosophy (3 vols., 1932) he examined the limits of the empirical method and stressed the condition of human freedom in the face of boundaries that science cannot cross, shaping theological and ethical reflection in the twentieth century.
Persecuted by the Nazi regime because of family connections, he was forcibly retired and banned from publishing; after the war he moved to Basel, where he remained active and consolidated an internationally recognized intellectual legacy.
