Karl von Habsburg is an Austrian public figure involved in politics, cultural heritage preservation, and the representation of the historic House of Habsburg‑Lorraine. The son of Otto von Habsburg and grandson of the last Austro‑Hungarian emperor, he assumed the headship of the dynasty in 2007, a role that combines ceremonial and cultural duties, representation at historical and commemorative events, and the administration of chivalric orders such as the Order of Saint George and the Order of the Golden Fleece. Trained in law, philosophy, and political science, with additional academic work in the United States and studies in business, he served as a Member of the European Parliament for the ÖVP (1996–1999) and remained active in European and pan‑European organizations. His public career has been marked by commitment to European integration and to humanitarian initiatives during the years of change after the Cold War. For several decades he has worked professionally on protecting cultural property in situations of conflict and disaster. He was president of Blue Shield International (2008–2020), advocated for lists of cultural sites to be protected during military operations, and coordinated emergency response and reconstruction efforts, such as those in Lebanon after the Beirut explosion. He also works on training military personnel and civil organizations in heritage safeguarding.
