Katharina von Brandenburg (Catarina de Brandemburgo) was a Prussian noblewoman who became known as Princess of Transylvania through her marriage to Prince Gabriel Bethlen. Their union, celebrated in 1626, was political in nature: it sought to strengthen Protestant alliances and secure international recognition of Bethlen by drawing Transylvania closer to the ruling houses of northern Europe. As part of the arrangement, Katharina received personal estates and was named successor should there be no heirs.
After Gabriel Bethlen’s death, Katharina assumed the elected government of Transylvania between 1629 and 1630, a period marked by intense pressure from the local nobility that compelled her to abdicate. Amid dynastic disputes and external influence — including intervention by the Ottoman Empire and internal factions such as that of Stephen Bethlen — she took part in selecting the successor, supporting George I Rákóczi.
Following the events in Transylvania, Katharina returned to Germany and lived with her second husband, Francis Charles of Saxe-Lauenburg, until her death in 1649. A member of the Hohenzollern family, her life reflects the intersections of dynastic diplomacy, religion, and regional power in the turbulent context of early 17th-century Europe.
