Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson was an American mathematician, physicist and space scientist whose precise orbital calculations supported the early era of U.S. space exploration. At NACA/NASA she worked first as a "computer" and later as an aerospace technologist, computing trajectories, launch windows and emergency return routes for Project Mercury missions, including John Glenn’s orbital flight, and contributing to Apollo 11 and the response to the Apollo 13 incident. Her shift from manual calculation to digital computers helped establish technical confidence in the new machines and expanded her influence in flight control and celestial navigation. She also worked on later programs such as the Space Shuttle and satellite projects, and coauthored 26 scientific papers. Recognized for her precision and technical leadership, Johnson received several honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Her career — overcoming racial and gender barriers in science — became a cultural reference and inspired film portrayals highlighting the role of Black women in the history of space exploration.
