Ken Livingstone is an English politician and a central figure of the British left in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He rose to prominence as leader of the Greater London Council (GLC) from 1981 to 1986, where he implemented social policies aimed at women and minorities and confronted Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government, which ultimately abolished the council. The nickname "Red Ken" and his reputation stem from his socialist identification and public positions on republicanism, LGBT rights and the Irish question. He served as Member of Parliament for Brent East from 1987 to 2001 and, after disagreements with Labour’s leadership, was elected the first Mayor of London in 2000 — initially as an independent — remaining in office until 2008. As mayor, he introduced high-impact transport and urban planning measures such as the congestion charge, the Oyster card and promotion of articulated buses, in addition to strengthening environmental standards and civil rights. Livingstone presided over London’s successful bid for the 2012 Games and received praise for his leadership after the 7 July 2005 attacks. A controversial figure, he drew support for pro‑equality initiatives and criticism over alleged cronyism and contentious remarks on international politics, matters that have marked his public legacy.
