Harold Adrian Russell “Kim” Philby was one of the most notorious spies of the twentieth century: a senior member of the British intelligence services who acted as a double agent on behalf of the Soviet Union. Recruited at Cambridge in the 1930s, he joined the group known as the Cambridge Five and, over more than three decades, supplied strategic information that affected operations in the Spanish Civil War, in the Second World War and during the Cold War. He held prominent positions within British intelligence, eventually heading counterintelligence and serving as the SIS liaison officer in the United States—roles that gave him privileged access to Allied secrets which he passed on to Moscow. Suspicions about his role grew after the defection of colleagues in 1951 and culminated in 1963, when the evidence gathered forced his flight to the Soviet Union. In Moscow he received official recognition and later became a consultant to Soviet services; he recounted his story in My Silent War. His life raises debates about loyalty, ideology and infiltration of Western elites, leaving a controversial legacy in twentieth‑century espionage history.
