Kim Wilson is an American blues singer and harmonica player, best known as the vocalist and leader of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. With the band he reached commercial success in the 1980s with the hits "Tuff Enuff" and "Wrap It Up," and became associated with a renewal of the blues presented in a form more accessible to a mainstream audience. Born in Detroit and based in California during his youth, Wilson entered the blues scene in the late 1960s, learning from traditional figures such as Muddy Waters and Albert Collins and absorbing the harmonica styles of players like Little Walter and James Cotton. In 1974, after moving to Austin, he founded the Fabulous Thunderbirds with guitarist Jimmie Vaughan; the band became closely linked to Antone’s, an important center of Texas blues. Throughout his career he maintained an active schedule of touring and collaborations, recording solo albums and appearing as a guest musician and producer on records by various blues and blues‑rock artists. His harmonica style, often praised for its density and a tone that evokes horn sections, has earned him recognition among his peers and awards within the blues scene.
