Klaas Schilder was a Dutch theologian prominent in the neo-Calvinist movement and a professor of systematic theology in the Reformed churches of the Netherlands. Trained in theology at Kampen and holding a doctorate from the University of Erlangen, he was notable both for his pastoral service in several parishes and for his prolific written and editorial work. From 1920 he contributed to the journal De Reformatie, becoming its chief editor in 1935. His work covers biblical and systematic studies, most notably the triad Christus in Zijn Lijden—known in English as The Schilder Trilogy—and writings on catechesis and Christian life, such as De Heidelbergse Catechismus and Heaven, What Is It?. These works blended sermons with scholarly reflection and influenced generations within the Reformed tradition. During World War II Schilder opposed Nazism, was arrested in 1940 and spent part of the occupation in hiding. In 1944 an ecclesiastical conflict that labeled him a dissident led to the split that produced the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated). His legacy endures in Reformed theology, both through his literary output and his role in the history and identity of those communities.
