Kurt Grelling was a German mathematician, logician, and philosopher associated with the intellectual circle in Göttingen and a founding member of the Berlin Circle. Early in his career he collaborated with Leonard Nelson on investigations into paradoxes that shook the foundations of mathematics in the early twentieth century, and in 1908 he identified a semantic paradox that became known as the Grelling–Nelson paradox. His doctoral thesis, supervised by David Hilbert, addressed arithmetic within the axiomatic set-theory framework, and in 1924 he published a didactic work on set theory aimed at the scientific community.

Beyond his technical work in logic and foundations, Grelling translated important philosophical texts into German, including works by Bertrand Russell, and became an advocate of Russell’s ideas. He increasingly turned toward philosophical positivism and helped organize the Berlin Circle, engaging in dialogue with members of the Vienna Circle and figures such as Hans Reichenbach.

Nazi persecution interrupted his academic career: forced to retire in 1933, he continued to run small seminars. In 1940 he was arrested in Belgium, detained under the Vichy regime, and later deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered. His work is remembered for its role in analysing semantic paradoxes, defending the foundations of mathematics, and linking logic with analytic philosophy.
