Kurt Heinrich Hohenemser was a German‑American aerospace engineer recognized for pioneering work on helicopter design and, later, on wind turbine development. Trained in engineering and holding a doctorate from Darmstadt, he worked with Ludwig Prandtl in Göttingen before being dismissed in 1933 for criticizing Nazism. He subsequently joined Anton Flettner’s team, where he produced the detailed drawings that made projects such as the Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri feasible. Sheltered by the technical value of his work at Flettner Flugzeugbau, he remained in Germany until the end of the war and emigrated to the United States in 1947. There he served as chief aerodynamic engineer in the helicopter division of McDonnell Aircraft, contributing to experimental projects that influenced later ideas about convertiplanes and rotor systems (for example, early concepts that anticipated the XV-1). In 1966 he became a professor of aerospace engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, supervising research on rotor dynamics and, from the 1960s onward, returning strongly to the use of wind energy with flexible rotors. He published technical papers and received awards from the helicopter community, leaving a legacy in both rotor‑system engineering and pioneering proposals for wind turbines.
