Kurt Schwitters was a multifaceted German artist—poet, painter, sculptor and a pioneer of installations—whose work crossed several languages and media. Trained in applied arts and painting, he moved closer to the European avant‑garde and, although not part of Dadaism, absorbed and reworked its possibilities in a constructivist key, influenced by figures such as El Lissitzky and Theo van Doesburg.
Creator of the concept Merz, a term he used to name his integrated output (poetry, collages, objects and installations), Schwitters elevated debris and everyday materials into artworks, anticipating readymade practices and aligning with tendencies that would culminate in Pop Art. His Merzbau, the spatial occupation of his own house in Hanover, is considered one of the earliest artistic installations.
Also active in design and advertising, he maintained ties to the Bauhaus and played a significant role in the typographic and visual renewal of the twentieth century. Persecuted by the Nazi regime, he went into exile and endured difficult years in the United Kingdom, where he died in 1948. The posthumous reassessment of his work confirmed his lasting influence on modern art and design.
