Jennie Spencer-Churchill, born Jeanette Jerome, was an Anglo‑American socialite and philanthropist who rose to prominence in late 19th‑ and early 20th‑century London high society. The daughter of businessman Leonard Jerome, she became a symbol of the “dollar princesses” — wealthy American women who married into European aristocracy — when she married Lord Randolph Churchill, with whom she had sons Winston and John. Her social standing and personal connections aided her husband’s political career and, above all, that of her son Winston Churchill. Renowned for her beauty and active social life, she had numerous extramarital affairs that affected her public reputation. After Randolph Churchill’s death she married twice more — first to George Cornwallis‑West and later to Montagu Porch — but never regained her earlier social prestige. In philanthropy, from 1914 she chaired the hospital committee of the American Women’s War Relief Fund, which financed and maintained hospitals during the First World War. Her life reflects the intersection of wealth, social influence, and the power networks of the British Empire, leaving a complex legacy tied both to patronage and to the public standing of the Churchill family.
