Larry Csonka is a former American fullback whose size and playing style made him a benchmark in the 1970s. Emerging at Syracuse, where he was an All‑American and set school records, he built a technical foundation and a reputation for strength and endurance before joining the Miami Dolphins as a high selection in the 1968 draft. With the Dolphins, Csonka turned his potential into offensive leadership: he was a central figure on the team that completed the perfect season in 1972 and won the Super Bowls of 1972 and 1973. Known for securing ball possession, blocking effectively and gaining yards after contact, he and Mercury Morris became the first pair of teammates each to rush for 1,000 yards in the league’s history. His career is also marked by recoveries from serious early injuries and by a technical transformation implemented by Miami’s coaching staff that helped him better exploit his physique. Recognized for his toughness on the field, Csonka was later inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, leaving a legacy as one of the most feared and reliable running backs of his generation.
