Lars Onsager was a Norwegian-born physical chemist who became a U.S. citizen, recognized for fundamental contributions to the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1968. He initially trained in chemical engineering in Norway and deepened his study of theoretical physics during stints in Europe, where he worked with prominent figures in electrochemistry and statistical physics. In the United States he built a prominent academic career, serving at institutions such as Johns Hopkins, Brown, and Yale, where he held the chair in Theoretical Chemistry for decades. His work included the formulation of Onsager’s reciprocal relations and studies of electrolytes, colloidal surfaces, dielectrics, phase transitions, metals, and superfluids. Known for an extensive body of theoretical work, he received multiple medals and honorary degrees from universities and scientific academies around the world, and was a member of national and international scientific societies. His legacy remains central to statistical physics and physical chemistry, influencing modern approaches to irreversibility and transport processes.
