Lee Edward Bowers Jr. was a railroad employee and one of the principal eyewitnesses to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963. As the operator of the Union Terminal Company interlocking tower, he had an elevated view of the area known as the grassy knoll and the convergence at the Triple Underpass, which allowed him to observe movements and people at the scene at the time of the shots. In his testimony to the Warren Commission and in later interviews, Bowers said he heard three shots and saw two men near an opening between a pergola and a wooden fence; he also mentioned a “confused air” above the roadway and a flash or smoke in the area where those men had been. Some researchers have interpreted parts of his observations as inconsistent with the official version that all shots came solely from the Texas School Book Depository building. Bowers built a career in the railroad industry and worked as an independent contractor; later he served as a hospital administrator. His death in August 1966, in an automobile accident, generated controversy among writers and researchers who linked the incident to investigations of the assassination. Given the sensitive nature of the claims and divergent sources, controversial aspects remain the subject of public and historiographical debate.
